I was watching a clip and in this clip, the speaker said these words. I found it to be pretty awesome hence the posting. I hope it is as meaningful to you as it is to me.
“The one who is always trying to discover the unknown, he
could not even discover himself, he who captured the rays of the sun, yet he failed
to fill the void in his life. The one who illuminated the entire world with
lanterns failed to realise the darkness within his own heart, if there is
darkness in one’s heart, what good is the light on the outside.” -Urdu proverb-

what does it mean actually?
I'll try to explain from my understanding of what I thought the proverb meant. We, mankind who are ever curious of what lies beyond us, we spend so much time and effort studying other things and exploring the world but most of us fail to understand ourselves, our existence (which is why we are so easily swayed and manipulated.)
The second sentence points out, although we have achieved many discoveries and successes in life etc, still after all the acceptance, wealth and amusement, man still fails to attain true peace hence the word, void.
We do many things to attain happiness and we have various forms of escapisms. The world seems like a place of amusement, and so it seems. We often think on why we feel or act a certain way, why sometimes we feel down and futile, though we fail to realize the pain originates from the heart being dried from spiritual light.
In the end it says, no matter what u do, what u have attained and accomplished; what kind of help/assistance u get from outside if the heart is devoid of love and spiritual light then just like material pleasure/happiness, happiness will only be on the outer surface, temporal happiness.
It could also mean, if a person does not have the intention and urge to change himself, no matter what kind of guidance he receives, he will still fail to see the truth.
Basically the proverb puts importance on knowing the self. We are too focused on attaining happiness that we forgot that happiness comes from the heart and not from the exterior. We are looking at all the wrong places for happiness when the source of it is within us, so to speak. It also emphasises on the importance of spirituality and how the heart should be pure to receive purity.
I hope this helps...I know i have the tendency to go on and on. This too, after I stopped myself from rambling longer hehe :)
